Yonge + St Clair Mural Commision

I have been selected to create a commissioned illustration that will be wrapped around an electrical box located on 22 Rosehill Ave, on the intersection of Yonge and Rosehill. My proposed illustration, Rosehill Simulation, captures the character and the community of the Yonge + St Clair neighborhood through a contemporary and imaginative lens. Inspired by the visual language of top-down RPG video games, the mural reimagines this intersection as seen from above - transforming a familiar urban space into a playful yet reflective "simulation" of local life.

Visually, the mural blends hand-drawn textures with digital illustration. The streets, buildings, and pavement are rendered in a pencil sketch style, symbolizing the organic and evolving nature of the neighborhood, while the people are depicted in vibrant vector form, emphasizing their role as the energy and heart of the community.

My design process began with on-site observation and documentation of the Rosehill and Yonge neighborhood. I took reference photos of the area and, with the help of Google Maps, developed a general sketch of the intersection in the unique top-down perspective I envisioned. I created my initial concept sketch in Procreate on my iPad, where I began blocking out colors, planning the composition, and mapping how the artwork would wrap around all sides of the electrical box.

From there, I designed the pedestrians and figures in Adobe Illustrator, creating custom and stylized vector assets . To ensure the final artwork is scalable without quality loss, I will transfer the full composition from Procreate into Illustrator. The background elements - such as buildings, pavement, and trees - will feature pencil sketch textures created in Procreate, refined in Photoshop, and layered over the Illustrator file to add depth and tactility.
